Frequently asked questions

Answers about what a skill is, how to connect Skilnu, and what happens once you publish one.

What is Skilnu?

Skilnu is a registry and MCP server for AI agent skills — plain-language instruction files you write once and use from Claude, ChatGPT, Codex, or any other MCP-compatible client.

What exactly is a "skill"?

A short Markdown file (SKILL.md) that teaches an agent how to do something specific — review a pull request a certain way, follow a style guide, run an incident runbook — the same way a recipe or a runbook teaches a person.

Do I need to know how to code to write one?

No. There's no syntax to learn. Non-technical teammates write skills like "how I like writing" or "meeting notes format" in minutes, the same way they'd write any short set of instructions.

How do I connect Skilnu to Claude, ChatGPT, or another agent?

Sign up, then paste Skilnu's MCP server URL into any MCP-compatible client. One connection covers every skill in your library, and works the same way across every client that speaks MCP. See the step-by-step tutorial for the exact steps.

Can skills build on each other?

Yes. You can compose a new skill from ones already in the catalog instead of writing everything from scratch, the same way software depends on libraries instead of reimplementing them. See composing and versioning skills.

What happens if I update a skill that other skills depend on?

Every dependent skill picks up the update. If you need to change something without affecting everyone who depends on the original, you can fork a skill without losing its lineage back to the source.

Can I turn a document I already have into a skill?

Yes. Upload a PDF, Word file, or Markdown document and Skilnu drafts a SKILL.md from it, which you then edit before publishing anything. Nothing goes live automatically — see the tutorial for how the draft works.

Are published skills checked for anything malicious?

Every published skill is automatically scanned for known prompt-injection patterns before it's available to others.

Who can see the skills I publish?

Public skills are visible to anyone, by design. Private and shared skills are visible only to you and whoever you explicitly share them with. Details are in the privacy policy.

Is Skilnu free?

The free tier covers core publishing, discovery, and MCP access within documented usage limits. Paid Pro and Team tiers unlock higher limits and additional features, billed via Stripe, and you can cancel at any time.
